AISD High School Cricket Tournament

It was a cricket tournament where 4 teams participated. AISD being the champion and Sunnydale the runners-up, the other two teams were Pledge Harbor and ISD.
After losing to Pledge Harbour by a thin margin we managed to show good skills against Sunnydale. Sadly they defeated us to confirm the second place. However, in both the matches, our players managed to earn personal accolades of being the best batsmen.
Subhojyoti Saha cracked 75 runs in 35 balls on the first match and Naveed scored 55 in 25 deliveries in the second match that contributed to the great chase we had put up in the matches. But one has to win and the latter loses and our luck did not favour us this time.
On the third and final match with AISD the Hawks were no more crawling. AISD batted first scoring a difficult 187 and putting ISD in tough situation. Our opening batsmen came out fighting with Subho again playing well for his 49 and Shakil scoring 82 runs in 52 balls particularly amazing. ISD was able to chase the target of 188 in only 17 over’s in an exhilarating match All the players gave in their best effort and winning against the champion might have not given us the trophy as we were down in the points table, but it gave us courage, determination and dedication to the sport.

ISD Middle School Boys Football League

As time flew by, ISD’s most prestigious tournament has come, the ISD middle school league. Split into two groups, ISD had four teams, along with four other school participating schools. The A team, as predicted, came first in their group, with the ISD B team still able to compete for the cup, coming second in their group. The C and D team respectively went on the play for the plate championship, having been knocked out of the cup. The semi finals consisted of the two able ISD teams facing one another, while DPS and CIS went on in the second match. ISD A had the edge, beating their fellow school team 1-0, and was off to the finals. DPS had also won their match, and the finals were set. A month of hartals later, the long awaited finals took place. DPS and ISD went head on, fighting for every possession. Two goals came that match, both coming from spot kicks. DPS was having fouling trouble, having repeatedly giving ISD a chance to score off a free kick. ISD took another magnificent shot from a marvelous free kick. ISD merged victorious, beating DPS 2-0, and winning the cup. The team had not only taken their own trophy home, as captain Nihan Taher would also receive the top scorer award, having scored 4 goals throughout the tournament. ISD once again had played and conquered another tournament.

AISD MS Boys/Girls
Badminton Tournament

ISD had high hopes coming into this tournament and with Mr Fry & Mr Ataur leading the way they had good reason to. 10 boys and 4 girls would compete in singles and doubles competitions to see who would be the best in DISA. Turns out ISD would be one of those.
In boys first, all 5 pairings took to the courts against tough opposition from AISD, Grace, and CTS and while some success was to be had, ISD would have no pairing in the finals. Zarar and Ashab from grade 8 would finish 4th in the their and just miss out on making it to the playoffs. In the singles tournament there would be no participant passed the first round with a special mention to Ronak who had the unenviable task of playing the favourite and soon-to-be champion in the very first round. Tough break!
Over to the girls, Farhana and Amasha were one pair with Noor and Pabasha (yes that’s Amasha’s sister) the second. The girls were place in different groups with the winner going onto a 3-way playoff with the winners of the two other groups. Pabasha and Noor unfortunately failed to make it through but Farhana and Amasha won all their matches to go to the playoffs. Their first match was against Grace who would put up a solid fight but the accuracy and power of the two ISD girls would prove too strong winning and putting them one match from glory. That match was AISD.  Farhana and Amasha got off to a flyer and never looked back claiming and easy win and with it the double championship!
The singles was equally exciting with all girls competing. Pabasha unfortunately got knocked out early against a strong seeded opponent. Meanwhile, Amasha, Noor, and Farhana were all successfully through to the semi-finals. Noor would face Farhana ensuring one ISD finalist which would be Farhana winning convincingly and Amasha looking to avenge her sisters defeat in the other semi-final which she did placing her in the final meaning ISD would be winners and runners-up. The final was of high quality but the fitness of Farhana saw her come out on top winning and being the double AND singles CHAMPION!!!!!!! Noor was also able avenge Pabasha’s defeat picking up 3rd place meaning the girls cleaned house with a 1/2/3 finish!
A fantastic result for the girls leaving the boys with a lot to make up! Congratulations to the girls and to Mr Fry & Mr Ataur who have given up many hours working with the team in preparation for this event.

ISD MS Hawks Manarat Tournament Champions

The ISD Hawks Middle School Team participated in the two-day inter school Manarat Junior Football Tournament on the 1st and 2nd of February. The first match was with Manarat B. It was a tense match but Zafir saved the day with an amazing header goal. ISD won the match 1-0. The team had dominated the New School Dhaka in their second group stage match, winning 4-0. This made ISD the group champion and off to the semi-finals. The match was with the much-acclaimed Sunbeams school. However, the team had star player Nihan Taher for that match to help the Hawks reach the final. Arafat showed great performance in this match with some great defending skills. The keeper, Asef created another problem for Sunbeams by saving numerous shots. Following a long battle between the two great teams, the team went to penalties. After a suspenseful chase, ISD had won the penalties 4-2. They met Manarat A in the final of the tournament. The match started with both teams getting great opportunities to score. Our defenders created an invisible barrier that allowed the Hawks to not concede a single goal. The winner of the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot out. Hearts pounding, our team was ready to take the cup. After some amazing saves by the keeper and unparalleled shots from our shooters, one final shot was to decide the winner. Our very own keeper, Asef, came up and shot the ball into the top corner with flare making him without a doubt, the man of the match.

AISD High School Girls Football Tournament

This year saw a new format unfamiliar to the girls. They would be playing 11-a-side instead of 7. This would prove to be a huge challenge and in the end, one that was too difficult to surpass. The first match took place on Thursday against AISD B. With half the team still in Borneo we were already going to be in a difficult position. ISD took to the field with only 8 players and this was never going to challenge the opposition and they ran out victors 4-0. A tough day.
Day 2 was more successful and we were up to full strength as we welcomed back the grade 9’s. Scholastica would be our opponents and some excellent passing and teamwork gave us one opportunity to score, we took it and won 1-0. A good start to the day. A further loss against Grace set up a quarter final with Aga Khan School. Although we played well it was not enough to stop the AKS in their attacks. 2 good goals saw the match taken away from us and out of the main draw. The final day was full of highs and lows anyway. Our next match was with Greenherald and was a very even match. Greenherald took the lead with their first goal of the whole tournament and we knew we had to work hard. Our efforts were rewarded through an equalising goal and took us to penalty kicks. 2 successful kicks saw rapturous celebrations, as we would go through for 5th place. Another penalty shootout came after a goalless draw against Sir John Wilson. The longest penalty shootout in DISA history where we went through the whole team and some others twice saw ISD miss the crucial kick. This meant we finished 6th overall, a 2-place improvement from last year and good result. Thanks to Mr Nazim for his support as well as the ISD Hawks fans who came to cheer the girls on.

AISD & Greenherald HS Boys Basketball

-->14th February. You people are probably thinking that I’m talking about Valentine’s Day but I’m talking about Valentine’s Day. 14th February marks a special day for the ISD Hawks Basketball team. Our first tournament of 2013 which was held at the American International School of Dhaka without our best play Megumi Maruta was way beyond amazing. Our first game was against Pledge Harbor and we won the game by a huge margin. The final score was 42 – 06 but Pledge Harbor put up a really good fight, they didn’t back down till the last second they tried their best. Our second game which was against William Carey Academy (WCA) in the morning and I must say that WCA put up an extremely tough fight. Unfortunately we lost against them which was not bad but we still had a shot at the championship. The next team we faced was American International School of Dhaka A – Team (AISD A) and the game against them was amazing but we lost but that did not let us down, we still had a chance to take the championship home even though we lost against them we won 1 game previously which placed us in the Semi Finals against AISD – B Team (AISD B) and yes, we did win the semi finals. For the 1st and 2nd place, we had a game early morning and we going to face AISD A again, we (as a team) put up a really good fight against them, we were at a point where we tied the game but unfortunately that was not enough and we lost by 10 points. We faced WCA for the 3rd and 4th place, we lost against them as well, which placed us for 4th position. Overall, the tournament was beyond amazing as I said before and we learnt a lot from it.

Next in line was the Mother Dolores 16th Tournament which was held at Greenherald International School. “Finally I get to play an interschool tournament” – Megumi Maruta, finally a tournament, where the entire family was playing together. Our first game was scheduled against Chittagong Grammar School (CGS) but unfortunately they could not play because of the hartals that were going on during that period of time which meant that that was our first victory! Our journey continued and our next game was scheduled to be against “St. Gregory,” they are the state national champions but unfortunately they could not show up either because of the hartal which placed us directly into the semi finals which was scheduled to be the next day. We were put up against “St. Joesph” and that game was tough game, I must say. They put up a really good fight, they were leading in the first 2 quarters but in the end we won which placed us directly to the finals. The Finals against the Greenherald at their home court was extremely fun, we learnt from our past mistakes that we made in the AISD tournament and we did not repeat those mistakes which in the end made us CHAMPIONS of tournament. This was the first time we played this tournament and we successfully won. “We came, we saw and we conquered” – Khan Md. Ershad.

ISD MS Boys Runner up in the EFID Football Tournament

ISD was invited to play in the annual French school football tournament. ISD took the spotlight having not a single loss in the intense group stages. The semifinal match took place against CIS, and having outplayed our opponents, ISD resulted victorious. The final match was against an opponent ISD has successfully beaten in their group stage, Australian school. Confidence among us, we played and excellent first half. As the second half came among us AUSIS became more fierce, and attacked willingly. 10 seconds left in the game, and the team had found an open shot, sending it to the back of their opponents net. ISD came second in this tournament.

ISD Primary Boys Champion in the EFID Football Tournament

This year’s French school tournament was a great success for ISD primary team. Our first match was against AUSIS, we pulled of an easy win 3-0, second match EFID we performed really well and won 4-1, third match MASP we were losing 1-0 but then ISD scored and the scores ended level. We qualified to the semi-finals and we faced GIS, we won 1-0, Then finally we reached the finals, we had to play against MASP again it was a very close match it was 0-0 and it came down to extra time, at extra time first MASP scored we all were stunned, and in the last minute we scored so it came down to penalties, the first penalty was scored by ISD it was 1-0 then the other players of MASP was not able to get the ball past our goalkeeper and we won!! We got the trophy and celebrated with our whole team. ISD is the new champions of the French school tournament!!!

AISD MS Girls Basketball

The middle school girls have shown great commitment and dedication this year so we were all excited to see how they would get on when it came to the test. After a win against Greenherald we faced AISD 1 in our next match. This proved to be too big of a challenge but a spirited performance saw us lose 18-5. Our final group game was against AISD 3; a win would guarantee a spot on the semi-finals and a top 4 finish. Some great teamwork and outstanding shooting from Nabihah Cader and Minnie Hua meant the girls won 20-2 that set up a semi-final against pre-tournament favourites Grace.  As usual, Grace were very well organised and too strong for us coming out on top 42-11 which put is in the 3rd place playoff game. This match was with Sir John Wilson School who we had no played yet. We knew it was going to be a tough encounter but a solid defence meant SJWS were only able to score 4 points and thanks to our strength on offence ISD scored 11 and with that picking up an excellent third place! This was a great achievement by the girls and very well deserved, next we will set out sights on the final.

ISD MS Boys Cricket Tournament

ISD’s contenders for this tournament were Pledge Harbor Sports Academy, Sir John Wilson School and American International School in a round-robin format. In their first game against Sir John Wilson School, ISD was able to post a total of 111 from their 15 overs with some useful contributions from Shubham Sharma and Azaanullah. With their bowling attack ISD started pressurizing the SJWS batsmen and they got their reward with Ashab taking 5 wickets. It was a nail-biting finish but in the end ISD managed to pull it off with a win margin of 10 runs. Next-up were rivals AISD in which ISD were to give a target to the opposition. There were some brilliant batting partnerships from Sohan and Azaan including Nashran and Shubham’s 50+ partnerships off 4 overs at the end. Our bowlers were able to easily outsmart AISD as their batting order collapsed easily under the influence of Shubham, Zarar and Ashab. ISD won their second match with a margin of 83 runs. The last match was a clash for the top spot with Pledge Harbor. Both teams were looking forward to the match with 2 consecutive wins in their hats. PHSA posted a massive total of 182 with ISD bowlers able to pick up consolatory wickets. Disappointed, ISD went out to bat and replicate their previous performances but the Pledge Harbor’s bowling line-up proved too strong for them. ISD finished with 116 runs giving the opposition the title.
Despite the loss, ISD was joyful in their success after seeing a massive improvement from last year. At the post-presentation, ISD was awarded the Runners-Up trophy while the captain Shubham Sharma received the Player of the Tournament Award for his excellent captaincy and sportsmanship.
Winner of the tournament – Pledge Harbor Sports Academe (PHSA)
Runner ups of the tournament – International School Dhaka (ISD)
Best Bowler – Farebi 9 Wickets (PHSA).
Best Batsman – Nasif 112 Runs (PHSA).
Player of the tournament – Shubham (ISD).

AISD HS Boys Football & Girls Basketball

The girls basketball was an exciting event with a new teams and new players. Our group consisted of AISD A, CGS, and new school Canadian Trillinium School (CTS). CGS and AISD were too strong for us with both teams coming out on top. It was then between CTS and ISD to battle out for the 3rd/4th place. An incredible encounter where both teams gave everything saw ISD race to a 19-8 lead and believe the match was over. However, CTS dug deep and began clawing their way back into the match and got within 1 point but ISD stood firm and held on to win and finish third in the group. Our next opponents were William Carey Academy (WCA) who were too well organised and solid a team for us and came out on top. Our final match was against AISD B team who were as pumped up as we were. ISD kept managing to get ahead before being pulled back by the Tigers squad. With one minute to go ISD was up by 2 points before sinking another basket to put us 4 points up and with our solid defence AISD could not get back into the game. This gave ISD a well deserved 6th place, 2 places higher than last year which is a great achievement. Thank you to the supporters who gave their time to watch and we hope to see you again soon.

Everyone in the team was ready to push themselves to make sure they won the title for ISD having come so close to winning in previous years. ISD's group was made up of Pledge Harbor, AISD B and BKSP. BKSP backed out of the tournament in the last minute. ISD's first match was against AISD B, and even though ISD went behind they dominated the whole match. By half time the score was 3-1 to ISD with the match ending 6-1. The next match was supposed to be against BKSP but ISD got a walk over. The final group match was against Pledge Harbour and ISD dominated the whole game. Sakif (G-10) scored a hat-trick in the first 3 minutes. The game ended 14-0. 3 people scored a hat-trick in this match and ISD became the group champions setting themselves up to play against Dharmarajika in the Quarter-final in Saturday.
On Saturday the whole attitude of the ISD team changed. A 3-2 win against Dharma and saw Waiz (G-9) injured with a broken collarbone from a rough tackle. The next match was against AISD A. This was AISD A's first match of the day and they were completely rested. This proved to be a main factor of ISD losing the match 1-0. Salim and Rafsan being our main attackers gave it their all but the opposition keeper could not be beaten on that day. This match resulted in injuries to Ishman, Salim, Sharif and Shakil. The 3rd place match against CGS, ISD only had 11 players fit to play which included 2 keepers. The match started with Shuvo in goal and the CGS team went up quickly in the match but ISD tried to front a comeback but ISD lost the match. In the end ISD lost in Semifinal but there are lots of positives to take away from the tournament. Who knows maybe we will get lucky the 3rd time.

AISD MS Boys & Girls Volleyball

DISA 2012 Volleyball Tournament for MS Boys took place on October 13, 2012 at the AISD. We could choose 10 players to represent the Hawks and all of them made excellent improvement throughout the tournament. First game was against AusIS – both matches we lost 11:25. Second game against AISD 2 – beginning was very good, we led 14:8, but at the end of the first match our opponents played much better winning it 25:23. Second set was not even close for us: 12:25 and second loss. Our last game in the bracket was against AISD 4 - very interesting first set, but we 23:25. Second set the boys played much better winning 25:15, followed by a win in the third match – 15:8! We were very happy about having our first victory that we celebrated it like we had won the championship! Despite the great last game, ISD Hawks got 4th place in the league and one more game against other bracket’s 4th team for the 7th place overall. Grace school started very well, beating us 25:7. Second set saw the Hawks show their best winning 25:21 and it was time again for a 3rd and final set. This time we lost 7:15 that gave us 8th place overall in this tournament! Many thanks to the students – Armaan, Prabhanu, Rehat, Afnan, Sarang, Reean, Willie, Ateef, Uday and Jack for a great day! Biggest appreciations to our Grade 12 student Megumi for assisting during practices and tournament!

Coach Sandijs

ISD HS Girls Basketball Tournament 2012

This was the first tournament that the girls had played and was massively different in comparison to last semester. We were joined by AISD, Grace Int, and last year’s winners Sunnydale. With Sunnydale our first opponents we knew it was going to a tough day…and sure enough, it was! At half time ISD was behind by 48 points which ultimately proved to be too much to claw back but a spirited fight in the second half saw Sunnydale only score a total of 6 points to make the final score 54 – 6.
AISD next and again a tough game. However some excellent defence from ISD and brilliant outside shots from Lubana Ahmed gave ISD real hope in this rival clash. Unfortunately in the second half some poor offense cost us dearly and AISD ran away with the match and ended up winning 36-21. A good performance by the team.
Our Final match against Grace was as good as the performance against AISD.  At half time the score was 23-17 to Grace but some outstanding shots from Ankita Kejriwal meant ISD stayed in touch. As with the previous match the second half saw the game slip away from ISD and Grace proved too strong on offense and ended up winning convincingly.
The final saw the consistent Sunnydale play some outstanding Basketball winning against AISD by a comfortable margin and regaining their title as ISD HS Girls Basketball Champions.
Overall, a solid start but with plenty to work on rest assured ISD will be ready to go for the next tournament in November at AISD.

Mr Smith and Miss Gibbons

AISD HS Boys Volleyball 2012

DISA 2012 Volleyball Tournament for HS Boys took place at AISD. After a month of practices and a few games against our girls’ team we really did not know how good we were. The boys really tried their best in all 3 games we played. Scholastica and AISD were much better than us, allowing us to score 7, 14, 6 and 7 points. Our last game was against Sunnydale – they needed to win only one set against us to qualify for the Semifinal (because Scholastica did not show up on time for a game forfeiting it), but losing both against us would allow Scholastica to be the top team in our bracket.
Both sets went up and down for us, and at the end of first one Hawks were a bit luckier winning 25:23 – first win for us in 2012 season! Second set Sunnydale were luckier at the end winning us 25:20 and heading to Semifinals!

I was happy to see the boys going for every ball, communicating on the court and really trying to improve! Well done! We hope to improve our record during the ISD Volleyball Tournament in November.

Mr Sandijs

AISD HS Girls Volleyball 2012

The Season opener for the high school volleyball squads this year was the DISA tournament. Hosted by our always-rivaling-sibling school (AISD), it was a solidly competitive match between eight teams for each gender group.
The Hawk girls found themselves pitted against the two toughest teams (AISD A and Greenherald) of the eight teams in their four team pool. Despite the fact that we played the American school’s ‘A’ team in our first set  and Greenherald  in the next set, the girls were really relaxed and played some very solid games. The two losses early on didn’t get them down: They were ready to come back hard—after lunch and fun practice time—to surprise the Sunnydale girls with a stunning loss. Unfortunately, our last game with them ended the day with a 25-23 “near win.” – tied  exactly point-wise with Sunnydale in our pool—but neither of us were destined to move on to the finals. The best part perhaps was the cheers of many ISD fans and the support of our players for each other. We especially were pleased by the boys’ team and others during our last game who cheered so loudly that the referees stopped the game to ask us to move our fans so as not to unnerve our opponents! Go Hawks and thank you fans!

Mr Lewis.

AISD Secondary Swim Meet 2012

September 22nd it was time to gather at AISD to see if we could emulate the success at ISD. The competition was greater this time with 5 schools in total swimming. As usual the ISD students gave everything they had and were successful in some events which kept confidence high. The swim season has been a huge success overall and I am very pleased with the numbers of swimmers we have had. Although the season has finished practice will still continue and if you want to join them in preparation for next season then jump on in!

ISD Secondary Swim Meet 2012

Friday 8th September saw ISD, AISD and Grace Int. gather at the ISD swimming pool for this years' competition. With a host of medals up for grabs it was always going to a very competitive morning. With last years' squad ready to swim, they welcomed Rushil Bhattacharya (Grade 6) and Jeong Min Ahn (Grade 11) into the fold. A year older, more experienced and stronger our hopes were high to medal in several races. We were not disappointed! In the Boys 10-12 100 Breaststroke final, Jack Tickle (Grade 7) swam well to secure a bronze medal for ISD, their first of the morning. In the same event but the 15+ category Zahin Khatib (Grade 11) picked up a fantastic silver medal! Those were our only individual medals but our relay sides performed amazingly well. The 13-14 Girls worked very hard to achieved a silver medal which was a excellent achievement but to finish off a hugely successful ISD event the 13-14 Boys secured GOLD for the school in their respective event. A massive congratulations to the team and Coach Sandijs. Also, a huge thanks to the staff of ISD for giving up their time to help support this swim competition.
